Water use

 

Average water use over the past week was 629 million litres per day, which was below the forecast of 659 million litres.

Since 1 July 2019, we have used 283 billion litres of water – which is 7.1 billion litres over the forecast for this period.

 

Dam level (total for 15 dams)

The dam storage levels have risen slightly this week and are sitting at a combined 43 per cent* of full capacity.

 

*Please note some dams are filled from different sources - dam levels include the transfer of groundwater and desalinated seawater from treatment plants as well as streamflow (that comes from rainfall).  As we use many different sources of water, dams are no longer an accurate indicator of the health of Perth's overall water supply situation.

 

Streamflow (total for 15 dams)

 

From 1 May 2019 the dams have received 0.5 billion litres of streamflow.  The post-1975 average for the May to April period (called the streamflow year) is 183.9 billion litres.

 

Sprinkler roster compliance

 

The two-day a week sprinkler roster now applies. Since 1 January 2020, we have taken a total of 2598 actions (warnings + fines) compared with 3885 actions for the same period in 2019.

 

Annual rainfall

 

Perth has received 202.6 mm of rainfall since 1 January 2020. The average (1994-2017) rainfall for the same period is 303.5 mm (to the end of June).

 

General water news

 

This week we appointed the head contractor to build the $25 million Denmark Pipeline – an important project to secure Denmark’s long-term water supply. More than 50 local jobs will be created during construction with $4.8 million to be invested into the local economy. Learn more here.

 

Water Minister Dave Kelly paid a special visit to South West on Thursday to announce the completion of a $19 million upgrade to the Margaret River Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project will double the plant’s capacity to safely and efficiently treat up to three million litres of wastewater each day. The treated water is re-used to irrigate green public open space in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River and a nearby tree plantation.
