Beautiful birdlife mural soars high at Wungong Dam

The bird watching platform at Wungong Dam in the City of Armadale has been spectacularly brought to life by Western Australian mural artist Brenton See.

Fremantle-based Brenton See, a keen photographer and birdwatcher, spent time at Wungong Dam gathering inspiration from local birdlife for the 13-metre wide mural.

Water Corporation’s Head of Treatment and Resource Recovery Rino Trolio said he was excited to see the previously grey platform reflect the beauty of the local landscape and birdlife.

“Brenton’s realistic-looking mural highlights the wonders the local environment has to offer, turning a dull platform into something the community can be proud of for years to come,” Mr Trolio said. 

“It’s all about taking inspiration from the landscape around us and reflecting the importance of water, its connection to the community and environment.”

Brenton See said he believed it was important to use his work as an artist to help educate the public on the local wildlife. “The more people know about their surroundings, the more I hope they will care for the environment,” Mr See said.

“The bushland area surrounding this dam is the perfect habitat for many species and they all rely on the water here to survive. Having a permanent water source like this is essential to the survival of the wildlife we live alongside.”

The bird species featured are the Australian wood duck, red-tailed black cockatoo, nankeen night heron, yellow-billed spoonbill, Australian shelduck, Australasian swamphen and sacred kingfisher.

Just 10 kilometres outside Armadale, Wungong Dam is a favourite picnic destination with free gas barbecues, recreation lake and public toilets. Open every day of the week until 6pm, it has been a water source for Perth for more than 70 years.
